Learn to Sail
Introduce your kids to a sport they can enjoy right away - and for the rest of their lives. Sailing is fun. Sailing is social. It builds physical strength and mental acuity. It builds reliance on oneself, encourages respect for the environment and offers the rewards that come from challenge and competition.
These classes are taught at Meydenbauer Bay Yacht Club on Lake Washington. Classes are open to all youths 8 to 18 years old who have demonstrated swimming ability. Membership in Meydenbauer Bay Yacht Club is NOT required.
Beginning classes focus on the fundamentals of sailing, basic dinghy handling, and safety. Intermediate and advanced classes expand boat handling techniques and introduce racing. Classes are taught by instructors certified by the United States Sailing Association who are trained in water safety and first aid.

Meet promptly every day in front of the MBYC Clubhouse located at 9927 Meydenbauer Way SE. The classroom we use for the lessons is in the club's “Crow’s Nest” which is up the stairs to the left of the front door of the MBYC. The sailing dinghies are located on the plastic floating dock at the end of Dock 3; the moorage pier on the right if you’re looking at the marina from the parking lot toward the water.
Students will need to bring the following items and PLEASE LABEL EVERYTHING:
- U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket
- Spare clothes, swim suit, warm clothes, hat, towel
- Lunch, water bottle, snacks
- Sunscreen, sunglasses
We will be sailing and swimming starting on the first day, so come prepared.
On Wednesdays we offer Open Sailing
from 4:30-6:30PM free of charge to all MBYC Sailing students who are currently enrolled in this years Youth Sailing Program. Parents and guests will need to sign a separate liability agreement (Open Sailing Agreement) similar to what’s on the lesson application. That can be downloaded here
. No reservations are necessary, just meet at the boats and bring your Open Sailing Agreement.
At the end of the week, on Friday, we have a lunch barbecue after sailing to a nearby park. We will be asking for help providing the food.
If you have any questions feel free to email, call, or ask one of our instructors.
Thanks for being part of the MBYC Youth Sailing program. We know you will enjoy it! Have fun!
